Scholarship & Bursary Scheme of Penang Kar Yin Fee Kon

1. Objective and Background

Penang Kar Yin Fee Kon has long upheld the mission of “Promoting Education and Nurturing Talent”, firmly believing that education is the cornerstone of the continued development of the Kar Yin community.  As early as the early 20th century, the Association established night schools and reading rooms to provide learning resources and cultivate cultural literacy among members.

On the 1st day of November 1955, at the initiative of the late President Mr. Tan Chong Min, the Association formally established the “Scholarship and Bursary Committee for Members’ Children”.  This institutionalized scheme aims to award scholarships to encourage academic excellence and provide bursaries to assist students from underprivileged families, thereby continuing the Kar Yin tradition of diligence, perseverance, and mutual support.

2. Types of Financial Assistance

Scholarships

Awarded to children of members who achieve outstanding academic results.  Applicants must meet the specified academic requirements.

Bursaries

Provided to children of members from economically disadvantaged families to alleviate their financial burden. Applicants must meet the prescribed financial hardship criteria.

Special Funds

  • Madam Cheng Ooi Soon Moi Bursary Fund: Specifically supports underprivileged students in furthering their studies, embodying the spirit of “from the community, for the community”.
  • Federation of Kar Yin Associations Study Loan Scheme: As a member of the Federation of Kar Yin Associations of Malaysia, the Association assists members’ children in applying for study loans provided by the Federation.

3. Evaluation and Awarding

Review Mechanism

The “Scholarship and Study Loan Committee”, comprising members of the Board, shall be responsible for the evaluation process, ensuring fairness and transparency.

Announcement & Awarding

Award recipients will be announced during the Association’s Annual Celebration and the awards will be personally presented by the President

7. Application Procedure

  1. Complete the “Scholarship/Bursary Application Form of Penang Kar Yin Fee Kon” (attached to this document);
  2. Attach photocopies of supporting documents (birth certificate, academic results, income proof, etc.);
  3. Application forms may be obtained from the Association or requested via WhatsApp (012-5324249) from the Scholarship/Bursary Officer;

8. Future Outlook

Since its implementation, this scheme has benefited hundreds of Kar Yin students, many of whom have become leading figures in society and have contributed back to the Association, perpetuating the Kar Yin tradition of supporting future generations. Moving forward, the Association will continue to expand the scope of financial assistance and invite community benefactors to establish special funds to jointly promote educational development and pass on this legacy.
